This is a movie that is brilliant, beautiful, and wonderfully tragic in it's portrayal of women, friendships, and Mothers & daughters in the late 50's. As a Biracial woman I found it very powerful in it's attempt to address the complexities of racial identity . Adapted from Fannie Hurst's novel it's 1959's Imitation of Life. Starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, Susan Kohner, Robert Alda, Dan O'Herlihy, and Gospel music star Mahalia Jackson.

  • I get teary eyed every time Sarah Jane runs through the streets opens the herse and goes, "Mama," and sobs. Gets me everytime. *sniffs* Really proves how we should treat people who love us. Despite there being racial differences, it doesnt matter.

  • Man until this day this is one of my favorite movies I love the original one, but this one is my favorite...1. Because of the Music 2. The acting is done in a way that only 1950's actors can do it...3. I learn something different every single time I watch the movie. This movie always seems to come on when I'm having issues with my family, and put everything back in perspective for me... Love this movie. You know they did a good job when you litterally want to fight the actress at the end... LOL!

  • This was my first time ever watching this movie, and I cried my eyes out at the ending. I have to say that I think it's a great movie. Really teaches you to watch how you treat people, esp. your loved ones. This was a huge lesson about LOVE. Love for self and love for others.
