There is some (disputed) evidence that the invisible planets were referenced in certain Hindu texts. Jyotisha also had a set of invisible planets--really calculated points in space--that are supposed to be used in chart interpretation, but seldom are. By the way, Saturn functions as a malefic generally, but can function as a benefic for certain rising signs. An interesting lecture, by the way.
The invisible planets were not known to the ancients, that is why they don't rule any astrological sign. Saturn is malefic depending on its position in the zodiac, just as any other planet, however, being the end point, the highest sphere before the final starry firmament, made it a unique boundary and limitation to the soul ascending back to the stars.
