There in the Catechism is paragraph 1776, about obeying one's conscience. To read more and comment, please click on the top Beliefnet banner to go to Beliefnet.com or go directly to 'Beyond Blue' at http://blog.beliefnet.com/beyondblue/
It's quite a pejorative label to claim that moral absolutism is something that is 'black and white'. Church teaching is based on natural law, and while I agree it's an issue of survival and conscience, it doesn't mean that one's conscience is the final word. Church teaching IN ITS FULLNESS works for everyone, it just means that bipolar, and your difficulty in accepting teaching, is YOUR CROSS, and we deal with it when we listen to Christ within His Church. Praying for you, GB
How can you take your Catholic Faith seriously, and then refuse to believe central and serious teachings of the Church. Don't kid yourself Darlin. If the teachings of the Catholic Church don't "ring true" for you, then you aren't Catholic. Getting to heaven should be your highest priority, and you do that by following faithfully all the teachings of the Church. Staying alive spiritually is more important that any physical life.
People really kid themselves that they are " following their conscience", when really they are just following their own selfish will. People don't have to listen to the Church, just like they don't have to get to heaven. It's their very easy choice. Reject the Church teaching, and do what ever you feel, hell has just never been so easy to get to.
Conscience does not mean you can make things up as you feel. It's not some get out of jail free card. The teaching of the Church says contraception is wrong, knowing this, means that your conscience has been informed that contraception is wrong. So having been told this, you are rebelling against the Church and God ultimately and against your own informed conscience. Conscience is no defense when you reject the Church teaching that informs your conscience. Don't get caught in the old trap of fo
People can't depend on the RCC for truth. People need to find that out for themselves by reading the scriptures and using their own brains. The RCC has a long history of abuse, and continues on that path. I have seen much neurosis, depression, and anxiety in members of the RCC... which is born by believing doctrinal falsehoods presented by it's leaders. Scripture is truth...tradition is not.
Paragraph 1776, taken out of the context of the complete catechism, (cherry picked) might work that way, but we know that conscience is supposed to be properly formed, and in the case of a catholic, that means knowing your faith, knowing right from wrong, accepting what the church teaches and so forth. A properly formed conscience is then a santuary because it is reliable. You want what you want, and if that means twisting your conscience so it tells you what you want to hear, then so be it.
What it means to be a Catholic today? In regard to faith, and the teachings of the faith, it should be the same as it was 2,000 years ago.

OP, as a Catholic, I would say that you aren't Catholic because you don't believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church.
