It's a pity that most popular music lovers have no clue about the Kingston Trio's influence. Far more than any other root American group, they changed the direction music would follow. They even influenced the Beatles to a degree.

these guys were the first musicians I ever got into...I recently got a lot of their early stuff on CDs..they hold up veryt well indeed...they were hot for a reason....they were damned good

@valleysally They were damned good. And they made at least two albums per year.

Listen to the Kingston Trio while going down a highway and don't be surprised if the miles just fly by along with the time. They were GREAT!

its amazing, because they are all dead now

HEY guys, at 3 years old I was onstage with these guys. Because of that really hip music influence....I am not a worried man. I am fresh out of cigarettes, but I'm king of the road. Can you dig that scene? I thought you could. Peace to all those cool cats and slick chics out there. YOU KNOW, I hear they finally did get Charlie off the MTA. It was in a body bag. After 50 years he was a corpse. Kinda like rail travel in general. I do not prefer to leave on a jet plane.

@seansvoice yes, al was a kingston trio fan, but brian says that he wasn't.
-
@valleysally you should listen to it on vinyl like it was meant to be.

It's the stripe shirts!!!
But honestly, all music can be traced back to Folk music in one way or another.
I think of the pubs in Ireland and how men would spin their tales to music.

I don't know what I was thinking....I meant Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard and John Stewart now deceased, with Bob Shane still living.
-
@lcar4000 John Stewart was NOT original. Nick Reynolds WAS. John replaced Dave Guard. Nick died a couple years ago. I saw him during the KT 40th Anniversary Tour. He suffered serious hip pain.

Is it just me or does it seem the Beach Boys emulated a lot of what the KT did?

The Beach Boys were BIG KT fans...Al Jardine said that the BB's striped shirts were a direct result of the Kingston Trio look. The layered vocal harmonies were similar, and of course the Beach Boys covered Sloop John B (which was on the first KT album).
