The so-called "alternative" sound of the 80s and even early 90s was basically the punk sound of the 70s re-packaged, in a time when it was more socially acceptable. I have to wonder how many bands like Green Day and others simply cued up vinyl from the 70s and copied it.
As for Sonic Youth's Sugar Kane, it's actually a pretty good song that meshes a lot of different influences, giving the 60s and 70s avant-garde sound a new edge. Good stuff for Lou Reed and Velvet Underground fans.
