I went to see Joan Baez about eight years ago and she did this song. It was pretty incredible. Much better than this studio version. From time to time I read theories about what this song "means." If you know anything about Dylan, you understand that most of his songs are lyrical, metaphors that the listener can apply to their own lives. This song appeared at a time in my life where I was surviving by being able to be absent when it mattered. It is always a reminder of the best of those times.

I went crazy trying to understand this the first time I heard it. Now I just enjoy it and get the global idea.

Love this Dylan song. I love the way Bob sings it on "Blood On The Tracks" and I love the way Joan interprets it in her style with her wonderful voice.
Read her autobiography and she'll tell you exactly why she covered a lot of Dylan songs. Because they're so damn good, that's why. According to her he wrote the best songs of that era. I tend to agree. It's very refreshing to hear Joan do the Dylan stuff, because she does it in her own unique style which is pretty much summed up by the word "impeccable". She also said Dylan was a terrific singer...and yes, he was...back then.
