This video shows failed launch of the HARRIS 7 "Rocketcam" rocket on August 4th, 2006 at Capital High School in Olympia, WA.
The HARRIS 7 was a home-made rocket with a special built-in video camera for recording the flight. After ignition, the rocket's engine detached from it's mount and shot up through the center of the rocket body, blowing out the camera and nose sections. It was very disappointing, but now it's funny! Here's the official report...
At approximately 2:00pm PST, the HARRIS 7 "Rocketcam" suffered a catastrophic failure after engine ignition and exploded on the launch pad.
Immediately following ignition, the engine broke through it's retaining hooks and propelled itself through the rocket body, blowing out the rocket's innards, and sending the nose and camera modules hurdling out of control. The lone engine proceeded to perform a small loop-de-loop and fly hundreds of feet in the air, crash landing in a nearby field. The nose and camera modules crash landed near the launch site after reaching an altitude of about 30 feet, suffering minimal damage. The rocket body suffered the most damage, having it's fins blown out and insides burnt and torn. Fortunately, the nose and camera modules are recoverable and can be used for another flight, but the remainder of the HARRIS 7 will never fly again.
Stay tuned for the HARRIS 8!
@thecravenator42069 It wasn't being hand-lit. I was using a launch controller on a 10 foot cord, although it doesn't look like it in the video.
