In our top story today, the U.S. Navy is monitoring a North Korean ship now at sea. Officials did not say what the vessel was suspected of carrying. But the Navy is monitoring the ship under new U.N. sanctions meant to block North Korea from exporting weapons.

The U.S. says its navy is monitoring a North Korean vessel at sea under new U.N. sanctions barring Pyongyang from exporting weapons, including missile parts and nuclear materials.

U.S. officials said the ship, called Kang Nam, became "a subject of interest" after leaving a North Korean port on Wednesday.

They declined to say what the ship -- now in international waters -- might be carrying.

Kang Nam is the first ship to be monitored under the U.N. sanctions adopted last week after Pyongyang raised tensions by test-firing missiles, restarting a plant to produce arms-grade plutonium and conducting a nuclear test.

In 2006, a North Korean ship by the same name -- although not confirmed to be the same ship -- was detained in Hong Kong for suspected safety violations, just days after the U.N. Security Council imposed sanctions on Pyongyang for its first nuclear test.

Japan's top government spokesman Takeo Kawamura refrained from comment about the U.S. move.

[Takeo Kawamura, Chief Cabinet Secretary]:
"We understand this is an effort by the United States to make the U.N. resolution effective. However, we don't think it's appropriate for the government of Japan to comment on America's military activity."

Pyongyang has warned ships to stay away from waters off its eastern city of Wonsan until the end of the month, according to a Japan Coast Guard spokesman, which observers say could indicate another possible missile test.

  • France, UK, Japan and South Korea? You forgot about NATO's "One for all and all for one" ? it was used when the US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11. It means that all NATO members has to respond with military force.

And I doubt Russia will do anything actually.. And China doesnt want war - they threatened North Korea with breaking the alliance after N-Korea sank that S-Korean warship

  • if we do sink that ship then the North Koreans might end up responding with an attack to our country, there's a high possibility we might fight back, then war breaks up and China and Russia helps out North Korea, while France, Great Britain, and Japan, and also South Korea respond to the war,

there are many possibilities to this if we sink the ship, but its all going to end up with maybe WW III

  • @comments247 We would, they are a problem. The people under a famine, nearly the poorest Country in the world and little power from the rest of the state. Not to forget about the propaganda. Kim must die.

  • @comments247

It's the only way for the US to get rid of KIM JONG IL and his top military aids. A lot will die, but it's for the better of the country and around the world.

  • @sactownism love to bomb them? are you a fucking moron? do you know how many innocent people will die, please think before you type something.

  • The US would love to bomb the shit out of NORTH KOREA, but we can't because it will make the US look bad. You can't just expect the US to bomb them like that.
