Emotional climax from Mr. Holland's Opus with Richard Dreyfuss as Mr. Holland and the enchanting singer Jean Louisa Kelly playing his student who performs this beautiful song to secretly tell her conductor and tutor (Dreyfuss) that she desires and needs him (to watch over her).

In the audience sits Holland's surprised wife with the play's brochure after discovering the singer's name is Rowena (Morgan). A few weeks ago she overheard her husband composing a new melody calling it "Rowena's Theme". When asked about the name he makes up a pretext (even though he's actually loyal to his wife).

However, during this performance she begins to wonder whether her husband is having an extramarital affair with the young singer. He does not but his face shows that he is tempted and flattered at the same time.

Dreyfuss and his wife both have a lump in their throats (for different reasons) and so did I when I first watched this bold approach by the young student!

Notice that the lyrics of the song perfectly match the film's interwoven story. Here's an excerpt:

"Although he may not be the man
Some girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key

Won't you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh how I need
Someone to watch over me"

Enjoy this captivating and literally breathtaking performance by Jean Louisa Kelly and all the other actors who IMHO make this scene most memorable!

  • Happy 39th Birthday Jean! We love you -- one of the most talented, yet underutilized talents of your generation. By the way, I admire Mr. Holland....almost everyone else would've gotten on the bus.

  • @nubrubber I'm sure I woud be tempted by Rowena, but I hope I would consider my fututure and be true to a good family who stood by me for thirty years,, I hope, like Mr. Holland, that I would do the right thing and not have an affair, that could ruin my life and that of my wife and kids.

Love Lea Salonga. Her rendition of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" trumps all others.

But I would argue that Jean Louisa Kelly has the lock on "Someone to Watch Over Me."

It's not skill. Both are fully capable technically.

It's their interpretations. Kelly sings it with greater sincerity, greater earnestness.

Salonga adopts a cool, detached attitude toward the lyrics. Too cool, too detached, at least in my book.

  • Magnificent voice, feeling and orchestration. If there is a better version of this song out there, I want to hear it!
