If it wasn't for John Peel many of the punk/new wave bands would never have been heard. He championed many bands in his late night shows who would never had been played on mainstream radio.
Peel was as punk as the bands - he didn't give a shit for the contemporary sounds of the day and absolutely hated the pompous crap coming from Yes and their ilk.
Thanks to Mr Peel we had the most exciting musical era in the late 70s - without him it probably would had never got out of London. RIP John.
