When a drill string (the length of drill pipe, everything else including the drill bit, and in this case a downhole motor, that are beneath the surface) gets stuck, the oil company calls out a fisherman to try to retrieve everything with minimal loss/damage. In order to do so, sometimes jars are brought out and attatched to jar the string loose, hence the name. We were stuck at about 11,000 ft. and our jars were set to go off when we pulled 175,000 pounds... the impact when they go off is astounding, and did cause damage to the rig unit itself!
