Simple penetration and expansion test of the Speer Gold Dot .40 S&W 180 grain hollowpoint, using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. Test gun was a Glock 22 with a 4.5" barrel. Advertised muzzle velocity is 1025 fps, my 5-shot average was 999 fps. Test shot is from 10 feet. Pre-test BB calibration, approx. 600 fps, was 3.70", average of 5 shots.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Early on, I used wetpack for ammo testing, with or without denim. Beginning in 2011 I use SIM-TEST calibrated to ballistic gel specs plus 4 layers of denim. The denim is an IWBA standard simulating the density of heavy clothing. Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. Even by adding bone, additional clothing, etc., there are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. The law-abiding citizen bears ultimate responsibility for their ammunition choice and insuring reliability in their handgun.

    john

6-25-11......Glock 19 in the Sidearmor IWB. Lots of hiking, climbing, walking in the heat.

  • Do some ballistic tests using those darn bugs as the test media! LOL

  • @OneMansSanctuary

I am so over these things. I recorded another test today (.40 Hornady TAP) and there were segments where my voice was difficult to pull out of the background noise. The single consolation is that they go quiet at sunset.

  • i wanted to move to Tennessee from texas but after hearing that noise

It's only for 5 or 6 weeks. Come on over, then take a vacation when they return in 2024. It's not like this every year.

  • Thanks for posting. Can you clarify for us why you very rarely carry a .40 caliber pistol?

  • Thanks for the videos. Been watching them and trying to learn about different ammo for my glock 23 for carry. Which do you think is better between the 180 gr HST or gold dot? I narrowed it down to those 2. Just looking for another opinion. Thanks again

  • I finally bought a .40 caliber handgun, and this was the load I selected. Thanks for the tests, I have a lot of confidence in my choice of carry load now :)

  • my PPS has problems chambering the first round due to the size of the hollow point, i usually have to hold the gun upside down to chamber it, and sometimes it will chamber the round fine if i hold it up right, any problems like that with the other pistols?

  • what do you like better pdx1 or gold dot?

  • when do you carry .40? : )

  • @applevalleyjoe Ya lots of people make bonded hollow points in .40, they are all expensive ammo to make and to buy. This is not because they cant make it cheaper, its because when your life counts you don't want to cut corners.

  • have you retested the 165 grain gold dot with sim gel yet? couldn't find it anyways

  • @applevalleyjoe look at blackhills they have 50 round boxes for cheaper, but they are brass case.
