I have never understood this phenomenon. Sometimes it looks scary. It is probably involuntary, as they sometimes try to e.g. sleep but can't resist the reflex if a fly/bird/whatever is in their sight.

  • My cats do that whenever they see flies or birds. I have read that it's called "hunting-clicks". Some people say that this is similar to what bats do, to measure the distance between them and their prey. But I'm not sure, there are so many different opinions about this. But it's really funny to watch!!!^^

  • @MeetTheEnd Yes, some say it's meant to mimick the bite needed to actually kill the prey. :P

  • A quiet clicking noise may mean that your cat has spotted an unsuspecting bird and is planning lunch!

  • Indeed it may. In this case it was an unsuspecting fly.

  • Ha ha, my cats do that too whenever they see birds or flies. The cat is trying to imitate the sounds of its prey to draw it closer. So your cat is probably trying to buzz like a fly.

  • Thanks for another interesting explanation. :)
