KCPT uncovers what is now being called, "the quiet crisis"... SCIENCE ILLITERACY. Kansas City wants to become a bioscience mecca, but who will fill all these promised new jobs? Fewer and fewer young people are going into science and there's growing alarm that America is raising a new generation that is scientifically illiterate. KCPT exposes the problem as Nick Haines hosts a Community Conversation, Science Illiteracy: The Quiet Crisis, featuring guests from the world of science, business and education.

  • Right on the mark. Our values do not mesh well with science. Exactly. And the young lady brought up the point about sports stars versus lab technicians. Are these people paying attention? You don't go into science if you want money! It's hard enough because you're competing with the best and the brightest from all over the world. No matter how hard we try we can't produce more engineers or scientists than the rest of the world... yet they all want to come here because this is the fabled USA.

  • Scientists and Engineers make a lot mroe money than people think (especially the entrepeneurs who turn their inventions into relaity, like Bill Gates). There is only the *perception* that sceince and engineering is not a good way to make money. That was actually hinted at earlier.

Not MANY sceintists make 7-digit salaries, but MOST of them can make 6-digit or high 5-digit salaries if they are good at what they do (Professors at top universities have STARTING SALARIES in the upper 5-digits!)
