The Jenny in the poem refers to Jane Welsh Carlyle. Hunt was friend and neighbor to Jane and her husband, Thomas Carlyle. Given Hunt's rather challenging life - financial, marital and legal struggles, the poem speaks to having a bright moment in an otherwise dreary life.

It's true one quatrain was taken from Leigh Hunt's 19thC verse, but out of context. Hunt's poem is about the ravages of time. Whatever virtues the poem has lie in its economy stating that theme (we assume Jenny died). The song generalizes Hunt's poem and eviscerates it into a bland love song. The arrangement is one of the most bizarre I've ever heard. Listening to this song it's hard to believe that Broadway composers were writing songs of both musical and lyrical substance.

Today's singers just don't get the musical background as they did back then. Pitch, timing, reading music, full orchestras. Compare this to karaoke - sing a-long , "don;t know music, but I can sing" . Listen and learn - Thanks for posting !!

I came to this by a very odd route, a conversation about poetry bought me to seek out this track again and all the memories of listening with my darling father and now fresh as the day. I did not know it came from a poem in 1840. I feel a Guy Mitchell Fest coming on, a wonderful singer with a beautiful voice. Thanks to all who are posting his tracks on here.

My two favorite singers did better in the UK than they did in the US. They were Frankie Laine and Guy Mitchell.

How nice to hear this old song again. I
heard it decades ago on TV. Think it was
David Wayne who sang it.
Guy Mitchell had several hits when I was a
teen half a century ago. He belongs to the
era when pop singers had good voices.
Tx 4 the post.

I grew up with this song. I would play it on my moms record player and yes I listened to all her 78's and did break one. I found the 78 on e-bay. listened to it last night as a matter of fact. Brings back such wonderful memories. I am so glad it is finally here.
jenny =)
Thanks for posting this great track. I had this in the 50's on a 78 rpm disc which got broken (as they did!). Never replaced it although it may have appeared on some compilations. In the UK the B-side was 'To Me You're A Song' which was another great ballad (Jo Stafford recorded the same tune as 'No Other Love'). Another Mitchell track I keep looking out for is 'We Won't Live in A Castle' - yet another Mitchell classic which seems to have been forgotten.
