Flow Gently. Sweet Afton - Climax Jazz Band 1987
In 1987 our music friends from the Boston area, The New Black Eagles, celebrated their 15th anniversary. We had met them for the first time during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1973.
It was also our band's 15th year and we were invited to be part of their celebration weekend. I had just purchased a video8 recorder and taped several sessions of the Black Eagles which I posted last week. Just this morning I found that Ilse, my wife had taped some stuff of our band as well. Twenty years on the shelf, and I never looked at it.
I'm going to post it now. This tune is our version of "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton", a tune hardly ever been played by a jazz band, but yes, initially recorded by the great Wilber deParis New New Orleans Jazz Band in 1955 for Atlantic Records. I had this LP for many years, I think I bought it in the early sixties when I still lived in Holland. I introduced this tune to our band in the early eighties, we recorded it as well in our LP days, and played it quite often at jazz festivals.
Being retired from Climax for more than 10 years now, and having virtually forgotton this piece. It is my pleasure to bring it back in this way. 503
