Corfu, NY in Western NY State hit by a strong F1 Tornado 7/25/09 5 00 pm. I heard on the scanner that Corfu was just hit by a tornado. Dispatch came back to confirm what the police office said. He replyed by saying "A tornado just hit Corfu and I'm watching at it right now and it is heading east. So I looked out in my back yard and seen it as it was leaving Corfu. I ran to get my camera and caught the tornado from my backyard. The tornado hit corfu at 5:00 PM on July 25, 2009 and the funnel receeded back into the cloud at 5:05 PM.

  • What road was this shot from?

  • Dodgeson Rd at the Dairen/Alexander town line.

  • Opps, It's Darien, not Dairen

  • I was at Darien Lake during the tornado, no one knew what was happening until the air raid sirens went off. You really couldn't tell how bad it was because the clouds didn't look anything worse than a thunderstorm.

Too close for comfort, oh ya, I can confirm this was one tornado that DIDNT hit the trailer park because we were renting in the Darien Lake trailer park.

Thanks for the vid, excellent work!

  • It came down again north of Batavia around 5:10. I took a photo of it from Lowe's parking lot looking off northwest beyond Walmart/Home Depot.

This is a great video - puts my cell phone video to shame! Thanks for posting it.

  • i live out in chili ny, tracked this one on the scanner

  • We own a cottage on a private lake in Batavia which is a half hour away from Corfu/Darien Lake. Some friends of ours are living there for the summer and they were driving in it. They couldn't believe how black the sky was. I live in Irondequoit so thankfully all we got were heavy thunderstorms.

  • I live out in Wayne County - there was no way I could have made it out to West Monroe in time to see that, but I'm still kicking myself for missing it. In these parts, a tornado's a rare thing to see, but damn I wish I was there!

  • I live only a few hours away. Damn I wanted to see it >_>

  • Pretty exciting stuff. I caught what I thought was going to be one a couple weeks ago in Edmonton Alberta. It never made it to the ground though.
