I can't help but wonder how expedient or potentially counterproductive it is for anarchists to *stay* in the closet. I know that a lot of the influence people like Ron Paul and Judge Napolitano wield is because they play the role of ardent defenders of the Constitution, but I think that if they both came out and announced tomorrow that they don't believe in the state, the novelty of hearing that from two such visible public figures might shock some folks into a moment of clarity.

Anarchist sounds like a bad word, because it is rooted from the word "anarchy." Anarchy is simply an- (without) and -archy (form of govt). However, anarchy is used colloquially as a synonym for "chaos" or "pandemonium." When people hear anarchist or anarchism, they think of chaos, rioting, fires in the streets, cop cars getting turned over by angry mobs. A better way of saying you do not believe in a statist society is to identify as a "voluntarist." People think anarchists are pro-chaos.
