Na verdade, Otto Lilienthal e Sir George Cayley já tinham voado em aeroplanos. Abbas ibn Firnas e Ahmed Çelebi, em asa-deltas. Ambos são mais pesados que o ar, e tiveram bem mais sucesso que os dois mecânicos de bicicleta e suas pranchas voadoras. Mas nenhum dos itens citados pode ser considerado um avião.
Avião é um engenho voador autopropelido, controlado e mais pesado que o ar; o Flyer, portanto, não é um avião. O 14 Bis, que se adequa no requisito, é um avião.

@r0bb3rt5 Sir George Cayley has been described as the Father of Aerial Navigation. One hundred years before the Wright Brothers.
he had developed the first proper understanding of the principles of flight and constructed a series of models to prove his ideas. In 1853, fifty years before the first powered flight was made at Kitty Hawk, the first man-carrying glider flight was made across Brompton dale in the north of England by Cayleys coachman.
