The 8th FEA Student Conference - Akram Zaatari: "Earth of Endless Secrets"

The 8th FEA Student Conference [FEASC] was held at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture [FEA] at the American University of Beirut [AUB] on May 20 and 21, 2009. This year the conference was dedicated to the Inauguration of the 15th president of AUB, Dr. Peter F. Dorman. The program included plenary presentations given by distinguished AUB alumni.
One of these alumni was Akram Zaatari, founder of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut, Lebanon, who was honored "in recognition of his leadership and his significant contribution to communication engineering and research."
Mr. Zaatari's talk,"Earth of Endless Secrets", emphasized on his interest in the act of collecting, and the notion of study as an art practice. "This presentation looks at how banal objects can communicate the complexity of history, particularly in relation to severe experiences such as war and detention. This is an overview of documents and testimonies I have collected while working on four videos that touched the Israeli occupation of Lebanon."
