The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is made up of four separate optical telescopes (the Antu telescope, the Kueyen telescope, the Melipal telescope, and the Yepun telescope) organized in an array formation, built and operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at the Paranal Observatory on Cerro Paranal, a 2,635 m high mountain in the Atacama desert in northern Chile.

The array is complemented by four movable Auxiliary Telescopes. Working together in so-called interferometric mode, the telescopes can achieve an angular resolution of around 1 milliarcsecond, equivalent to the gap between the headlights of a car as observed from the same distance as between the Earth to the Moon.

Very Large Telescope - The world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory

The Very Large Telescope array (VLT) is the flagship facility for ESO's ground-based astronomy at the beginning of the third Millennium. It is the worlds most advanced optical instrument, consisting of four Unit Telescopes with main mirrors of 8.2 m diameter and four movable 1.8 m diameter Auxiliary Telescopes.

The telescopes can work together, in groups of two or three, to form a giant interferometer, the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer, allowing astronomers to see details up to 25 times finer than with the individual telescopes.

The light beams are combined in the VLTI using a complex system of mirrors in underground tunnels where the light paths must be kept equal to distances less than 1/1000 mm over a hundred metres.

With this kind of precision the VLTI can reconstruct images with an angular resolution of milliarcseconds, equivalent to distinguishing the two headlights of a car at the distance of the Moon.

  • Man, I remember watching a documentry that talked about the INITIAL BUILDING of the VTL, and how it would evolve from there.

Watching this makes me feel old. LoL

  • beautiful video!! we are so far from the center of the galaxy, it's so frustrating to be in the suburbs and see all these nebulas and suns so far from our solar system. ;0)

  • quite a cool video - Creation is very Big and Beautiful.

  • And then the "James webb space telescope" is born. What will we see next...

  • @Excyis it's fascinating how cognitively distorted and shut in the religious are.

  • Do people quoting bible really expect you to magically convert to their religion or something? Seriously. :| What the fuck?

    Psalm 19:1-6

"1 The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard. 4 Their kvoice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.

  • In them he has set a tent for lthe sun, 5 which comes out like na bridegroom leaving his chamber,

and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

and its circuit to the end of them,

and there is nothing hidden from its heat."

  • @PwnforceFrank

you are in the universe, in fact, you are the universe- think about it, all molecules in your body are the same molecules that make up everything in the universe...

  • @epanek

Think about the moment the universe was created... From nothing came everything we know. If energy cannot be created nor destroyed then how did this occur... There must have been something before it which means there must have been something before that to infinity...
