bibinson's tutorial: http://mikejmoffitt.com/tut/tut_cgb.html

EDIT: I changed this video from backlit to frontlit. It's actually a frontlight. Sorry for the mistake.

My first attempt at putting a frontlight screen from a game boy advance SP (Model AGS-001) into a Game Boy Color. It was the first time I soldered anything and hopefully it'll be the last. Took me 8 hours to get everything soldered, I went to bed at 3AM when I was finally done.

!!!!TIPS!!!!
I mentioned tips in the video, but I think the most important tip of all is to make sure the frontlight screen is attached to its metal strip the right away. I had to FLIP mine around, it was better but not quite yet, and then I had to TURN it around and then it was better. If you can't see the screen in a dark room then the backlight screen isn't attached the right way. Becareful with finger prints. If you do get them on the screen use eye glass cleaner with a soft cloth.

Use Swifer dry cloths to sweep up any dust between screens.

The long cable that travels all the way to the bottom of the Game Boy Color should be 5" long to allow yourself some cutting room.

Work on a glass surface if possible.

After the screen is in, it's going to be a tight fit so don't screw the screws in too hard. Just make sure that they'll stay there but don't overkill it.

A bit of soldering experience wouldn't hurt. I got hurt. Burned my finger... derp.

Oh, bibinson doesn't mention it, probably because the way he soldered his resistor didn't need it, but I had to cut some pieces off the bottom of my GBC to make room for the resistor and the cable, otherwise they would've been smashed and I would've been infuriated.

Good luck!

  • why would u take the backlight from a gbasp lol just use the gba sp lol

  • i just got ready to mod my GBc and took apart the GBASP that i got.

its a model AGS-001 like in bibins tut. but the screen is way different

i could not remove the backlight with a clear cover over it, it was glued to the screen frame its self and the circuit thingy broke off while taking it off. was your SP the same model?

  • where did u get the resistor from?

  • lol ill stick to my worm light haha

  • nevermind.... just ripped it.

  • how do i get the rectangle with the 3 holes off the SP ribbon?

  • @STAMFADERNA no, since that is back- and not frontlit.
