In September 2008, nine feet of storm surge decimated this refinery control center during hurricane Ikes rampage. The building was completely flooded and the owner was losing significant production & profitability each day it was down. SLA was asked to help in the restoration and replanning efforts. The opportunity to make improvements exisited, and the control room was expanded to allow for additional consoles, industry best practices, and SLA's innovations in lighting and acoustics to be incorporated. Using SLA's 3D BIM DistanceDesign© approach, the building was redesigned in real-time 3D over a period of 3 days, and received the Owner's approval in another 3 days, "twelve weeks faster than the last time we did this for a control building" according to the client. The reconstruction effort was completed in twelve weeks- well ahead of the client's expected outcome, but on-track with their urgent need to restore operations. A commemorative medal was commissioned and awarded to the entire team of builders and designers who helped make this possible.
