This video shows my design for a blaze grinder. It uses very few resources compared to other designs, and it's relatively simple to build.

Blazes give you twice as much XP as other spawner mobs, but they are more dangerous and more difficult to work with. This design uses some of their unusual behavior to corral them in a kill zone, where it automatically pushes a piston into them to damage them until they have just one hit point left.

You can dowload a .schematic of the entire Cheap Blaze Grinder (along with a couple minor improvements) here:

I've also made a tutorial describing the redstone control circuit:

Great design, going to build it, had a thought watching it, if you added pressure plates and pistons, you could have it respond actively to the edge landers, or perhaps you could have an individual step fire a cycle that sweeps all the pistons on all the edges, effectively collecting all the stay behinds, this should increase your capture rate quite a bit.

That was actually exactly my initial design. However, it fails pretty quickly. Pushing monsters with pistons doesn't work very well. They get caught inside the moving block and the system seizes up. The corners are particularly problematic. It also ends up getting far more expensive.

Are the blazes inside the funnel flaming? That means they've spotted you. You'll have to get at least 128 blocks away from them and then return to reset them.

Would you ever consider making a Blaze Farm with water?

This one is ingenious, but would it be possible?

You can't get water in the Nether (well, except in a cauldron... I doubt having a blaze fall into a full cauldron would damage it, and there's no way to control it, so that won't help anyway). With the latest snapshot you can have blazes move through portals into the regular world where you can use water to damage them, but that's tricky, you lose a bit of efficiency, and there's an increased risk of bad lag or crashing Minecraft.

Not to be juudgemental, but you kind of overcomplicated the wiring. You can simply use a compareator to activate the suffacator piston

Great video! Very informative and easy to follow, which can not be said for the vast majority if Minecraft "tutorials" on YouTube. I'm using this build now myself and it appears to be working without a hitch. Thanks!

Ive built your design which is very good, but i find i am only getting 2 blazes drop at a time, whilst in your video you are getting loads, is there any ways to get more blazes at once?

its good but if one sees you it flys to the top and stops spawning then you have to go away and come back and start again

Wait, your only reason not to use sword is the wear and hunger? Farming cows is quite easy for a plenty of beef, and stone swords are dime a dozen.
