I noticed OMD because of Sailing on The Seven Seas, fell in love- Pandora's Box, became as a hot fan because of All That Glitters.
This song had helped me lots. How?

For 50 years the Baltic states were a part of the USSR.
In 80th the leader of the USSR Mihail Gorbachow brought the idea of the democracy.
About at the same time Latvians, Lithuanians and Estonians started the struggle for independency.
We had no guns. Our weapon was our will.
The whole world understood and supported us, but Moscow didn't want to let us become free.
Especially difficult was 1991. In January Soviet Army attacked our capital cities, but in August 19-21 the Communist Coup took place in Moscow.
These were terrible 3 days, nobody knew, what could happen.
I was a member of several political organisations and got an anonymous letter, "Are you ready to die in Siberia?"
My only shelter was the song All That Glitters. Listened to it all the time and felt- Andy McCluskey was next to me, and the songwords, "All your friends are here tonight" made me feel safe.
When the cope was over, it actually was also the end of the USSR.
But since that time All That Glitters is the symbol of peace and safety for me.

Sorry, Mr McCluskey, I know, Your idea of the song was totally different...
And thank You, Mr McCluskey, thank You for all!

  • This song is about Andy's feelings about the end of OMD in 1990. It's about his feelings of pain and hurt at the end.. comparing it to "only lovers" being so cruel. I guess that the scars have healed as the band is back together.

  • @themotorman123 One of the reasons, why i love OMD music soooo much- it isn't music "just for ears", but for soul and mind. Each note touches you deeper and deeper. It's the reason, why everybody can imagine something special and personal during the listening.

  • wielcy tego swiata sa silni nasza słabością............

  • Also one of my absolute favorite OMD tracks and a great last track for an album.

  • Great post. A+ for the historical note. Most people don't realize that more people died from communism than all the wars combined.

  • Three beautiful Baltic independent states. Sure. And again you "forget" about Poland... We experienced the same in the same way at same time due to the same ... Hey, free Balts! Who's your friend and who's your foe? If you forget about Poland - it means you did not your learn your leson at all... Until next time then...

BTW - I love OMD and expected something a bit different but... Interesting collocation .

  • Art imitates life, in this case.
