"How can I help you?" causally speaking, most situations.
"How may I help you? The most formal and polite manner, phone or banking reception, hotel, dinner.
I have made a huge mess on the table, trying to find the right size of this incredibly bargain party dress. A sales approached me with a not so pleasant, definitely bitchy looking, said to me "Can I help you?"
"Just stop what you are doing now!" is what she meant.
