Had a chance to sing the counter-tenor part in this, chickened out to my eternal shame & regret! The most poignant & ethereal piece of music ever written, in my opinion?

I'm not religious, but I've loved this piece ever since singing it in my school choir last year. It's one of those pieces of music that you never forget...

I'm an atheist but I absolutely love this kind of music... I'd like to slip in to a protestant church during a mess sometime :)

I agree: the finest sounds of one boy's voice can be heard only during a very limited period. That must have been the reason why many of these boys were castrated in the 16th to 18th centuries - to keep as many of these fine voices as possible for choirs like the Sistine Chapel's, which Allegri belonged to. Or to make them famous opera singers - some succeeded, many never reached fame. The New College performance is really fine, but we can only guess how the music sounded in the composer's days.
