It runs on a freight line that's never been electrified, so it would have really increased the cost to install catenaries. Its target demographic are the commuters who drive the 40 mile round-trip each day on Hwy 10. If the areas around the stations get denser I'm sure it'll evolve from a commuter service to a regular line like Hiawatha LRT.
@Nexis4Jersey That's true. You must remember that Northstar is just a new commuter service. Electrification probably won't occur for at least another 10 years. It will be more advanced also, instead of overhead catenaries. It will likely be the more advanced third rail. Possibly even underground. There's less maintenence and the cost is less. The newest diesel locomotives are still very efficient. Trying to get the more cost worth gas guzzling cars off the road is not a waste of money.
@Nexis4Jersey I quote what mulad said. If you've seen the GO Transit, FrontRunner, RailRunner or Metrolink coaches, those are the type of coaches that are used on the Northstar. The reason you have electric trains is because your in the Northeast Corridor. Also, electric locomotives usually break down more often than diesel locomotives. Your locomotives aren't really as good looking either. You still have comet passenger cars as well. So there is some competition here.
this is such bull, its going to flopits service is slow it has to plan routes around the burlightion northern rail that owns the tracks, they forced b.n. to use the tracks, plus theres a sub station, where you have to get off and board a subway style train to get to the sports dome or the mega mall, tax money spent poorly
I agree that electric would be better. Tradeoffs had to be made when it was built, but now that it's there, I'm sure there will be a lot of push for upgrades in the future.
