@johndlabella This is exactly what I was thinking.

she sounds very young in this. Caballé has such a gorgeous tone and great sense of musicality. She's always such a pleasure to listen to.

Sus pianissimi son gloriosos pero, sus portamentos son insoportables...!

I started listening thinking this was fantastic- then as it drug on i thought, there's more to an aria than gorgeous high notes and went back to my favorite.. EILEEN FARRELL live from the Bell Telephone Hour.

I agree totally. I would even go so far as to say its almost vulgar the way she sings it here. She sounds way to "plummy". The recording however for DG is stunningly beautiful. Lots more piani than here- she really gets that floating feeling across. Anyway, interesting comparison. This is really the one fantastic effect of YT. For the opera scene it has been a revelation. So wonderful to be able to hear and compare recordings and a big thanks to the people like Onegin that keep it always coming.

This is gorgeous singing except for the obstrusive glottal attacks that mar the rendition. Caballe sang this aria much better in the later 1970 French Aria album for DG - although in the later version the final high b pianissimo is not quite as magical as this earlier recording.

but I think what he means is that the pianissimi at the very top of her register (eg the high c in aida, the high d in lady macbeth sleepwalking scene) is simply unbelievable!
One word: pianissimo. You are a musical troglodyte. 4:45 no other singer in recording history can do this it is simply a musical miracle. Kind regards Mr OneGin this entire 1964 recital is simply a dream.
