@prettykoolkatt - I quite agree. Oriental dance is an art to be danced exclusively by women. But as for viewing, both genders should be able to enjoy the life affirmation it promotes.

This is Suspira - the dancer featured in the video. The way the video was edited, the statement took on a different meaning than the intent. What I meant by the statement is that it was not a dance designed to ENTERTAIN men as commonly thought in western culture....that it is instead a folkloric dance. There are certainly very talented men that dance many styles of Middle Eastern Dance. ;)

Are you saying that men should be excluded from belly dance performances?
I wonder if Miss Suspira feels that the audience should be exclusively female.
To me, in order for something to be an art form, its appeal must be universal. On that basis, everyone should be able to enjoy it.

By far the vast majority of belly dance fans are women. Why so few men like it is beyond me. But as a man, I like it very much and consider it one of the greatest art forms in the world.
As for the notion that it is exclusively for women, I do not agree. See the various Biblical accounts where women danced for men's entertainment with cymbals, arms flailing, and much movement just like belly dancers do today. eg, Jeremiah 31. As an art form, it is universal and that means everyone.

Beautiful piece! I love this dance very much, and they did a good job of capturing the different generations. All three generations were beautiful dancers!
As an Arab woman myself, I am happy to see it clarified that this dance was NOT created to entertain MEN but as something to celebrate LIFE. I don't think this dancer was saying men can't bellydance, but saying that it wasn't created for their pleasure, but instead for ours. In my culture its very rare that men bellydance, they do have their own folklloric dances, but we do not consider it "belly dance".

Outstanding! Miss Suspira is delightful. She manages a first class business simultaneous to earning the respect of her students.
For those of you that have inserted comments about the history, it is wonderful to see so many people taking a defensive posture towards the historical facts of the dance. Enthusiasm will stimulate more dancing, birthing, male and female creativity, education and love. Rock on Belly Dancers!
