It would be nice if Mr. Helfeld could have have asked Barnes if he favors the redistribution of wealth through the inflation tax. Should old ladies on fixed incomes have their purchasing power siphoned into fed purchases of U.S debt and at the same time, through legal tender laws, be compelled to transact in a perpetually depreciating currency ?

The Weekly Standard has President Obama hiding behind a sand dune with a camel this week. The caption reads: Leading From Behind.
I guess, sometimes, karma is immediate. Isn't it..Bill Kristol.

Jan. Time for a new camera bud.

Fred Barnes's answers surprised me. He is much more of a Libertarian than I imagined.

How can you protect people if you tax people. That is a contradiction. Since tax is violence and this is exactly what you want to protect them from.

@janhelfeld other than Rand's conviction that copyright MUST be strictly enforced, it was my impression that the bomb-throwing-anarchists of her youth in Russia left a lasting impression. Beyond that, no.
Mises, on the other hand, considered the fact that human beings had ceded their "right to resort to violence" to an institution to be one of the greatest inventions ever, removing violence from the realm of legitimate interpersonal interaction. I heard that in a speech he gave.

great points, libs don't get it when it comes to why we should tax. good work Jan
anarchism @CurtHowland The society degenerating into gang warfare that later fester into generational vendettas like the Hatfields and the McCoys, no final arbiter of disputes and an incentive for thugs to increase armaments and improve their extortion activities putting pressure on everyone to arm to the teeth and form alliances that inevitably have disputes and result in gang warfare. This is the so-called dreaded state of nature that Hobbes speaks about and almost nobody advocates.

Even though Rand thought coercion was wrong, she never went that last step to eliminating govt entirely. Neither did Mises, for that matter.
I think they both "feared" anarchists, without really coming to grips with the fact that 'bomb throwing anarchists" are really Socialists that are out of power.

@CurtHowland Do you know the reasons why they were against anarchism? There are many.

I wish you would have pursued the "money for military" issue. Taking my money by force (tax).... to "nation build" or fighting the "war on drugs" or supplying dictators with arms is not a reason to tax... even though that is what the military does with the money. Might start incorporating that into your interviews.
