The people's immortality was based on the success of the pharaoh obtaining immorality for them. That was a powerful motivation for them to obey the pharaoh in all things.

The immortality of the people was dependent on the immortality of the pharaoh. That's one reason why the people worked so hard to build the pyramids to the king's specifications. They believed that their immortality was tied to his successfully making the journey through the underworld.
