MESA stands for Math Engineering Science Achievement. The purpose of MESA is to increase the number of under served ethnic minority and all female students who pursue course work, advanced study and possible careers in mathematics, engineering, and science areas. MESA began twenty years ago as a partnership between the University of Utah and the Granite School District. In 2010, the Utah Legislature cut an $8 million line item in the public education for programs for at-risk students. This included the funding stream for MESA. In October, 2011, the Utah State Board of Education prioritized restoration of this line item to once again earmark funds for programs like MESA that help at-risk students.
