At the moment there are more than 30 different types of chargers for phones across Europe. It is estimated that 51,000 tonnes of redundant chargers are generated each year and the introduction of the new charger will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 13.6m tonnes. The European Commission signed an agreement with ten leading mobile companies to offer a standard charger that will be based on a Micro-USB connector.

  • @Krasoslav You're stupid ;)

  • Universal phone charger is a good idea that should have been done years ago.

  • @thesapiens16 You are funny..

  • Super! Excellent project!

  • This will result that all companies will outsource the manufacturing of their chargers to one big company, not saying that's a bad thing.

  • Just because it is now possible to connect a mobile phone to a universal charger, because of the adoption of a particular specification of a USB connector---which should also apply to digital cameras, it does not follow that the phone's battery will be charged to capacity in the expected time, due to differences in the batteries required for an advanced smart-phone or a basic phone which has less need for a high capacity battery, as Nokia's Peter Harrison, alluded to.

  • Good idea but I am not an EU-Citizen. I don't recognize my country's membership in the EU. But as long as they insist on making laws, inspite of soverign country's constitutions, I hope the next idea from the EU will be to promote community organic farming, allowing everyone the right to eat healthy food very inexpensively and reduce cabon immissions, by reducing international traffic (air, land and water) in that trade sector.

  • Great, but I can't understand why can't we use one language. Current "status quo" is so stupid, because unknowingly we are using english as a common language - and GB is in a much better position which is unfair. Esperanto or some sort of modified "Euranto" would be great!

  • #OMG finally you guys out there in Brussels have done something right. Congratulations!!!

  • finally !
