Both spacecraft are flying to a point in space known as the second Lagrangian point (L2), a great place from which to observe the larger 'cold' Universe. Here spacecraft with sensitive instruments do not pass in and out of Earth's shadow, heating up and cooling down, and are far away from the heat radiated by Earth.
