Unboxing the Sony Alpha 55 - 200 telephoto zoom lens (DT55-200mm SAL55200-2). Hands on and first look of this 55-200 SAM (smooth autofocus motor) f4 - 5.6 crop lens with my Sony Alpha a33 dslr camera, using in-body stabilization (Super Steady Shot), continuous autofocus and built-in microphone. It is an a-mount lens with circular aperture and comes with a lens hood. May do a review in the future.

This lens' closest rivals are the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II USM as well as their EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens and Nikons 55-200mm f4 - 5.6 Zoom Lens With Vibration Reduction (AF-S DX VR). Within Sony compatible lenses, the Tamron 55-200mm f4-5.6 and their 75-300mm as well as a used Minolta Beercan is its rivals.

The Sony a33 SLT (Single Lens Translucent) competes with the canon t2i (Rebel 550d), and the t3i (Rebel 600d) as well as the Nikon d3100. The a33 will soon be discontinued and replaced with the Sony a35

Tripod used: Joby GorillaPod SLR zoom

  • @jioboi Thanks man. Ya in my opinion, I think the Sony SLT line of cameras (a33,a55,a65,a77) have the best autofocus system by far of all 'DSLR's :) Still LOVING mine and I think its perfect for youtube!

  • @PureTranceMedia Do you know if the cheaper Sony 50mm lense does this a well ?

  • @mrPACarrier Ya all Sony SAM lenses do this, the smoother version is Sony's SSM lenses, but they cost alot more.

  • is it normal that the zoom is not smooth ? my Sony 18-55mm lense do that as well!

  • thats amazing AF for video! the noise isn't that disturbing too nice cam dude

  • @Smolenskiy711 No problem :) If you're looking for an inexpensive telephoto zoom for your Alpha with decent picture quality, you won't be disappointed with this one!

  • Thanks a lot for review/ Exactly that what I am interested.

    Regards from Ukraine

  • @crackedaces Thanks for the kind words bro, as for the af/mf, ya it was in AF, but the zoom ring is what I was rotating which is independent to the focus ring, but ya if I do try rotating the focus ring instead, its dam near impossible when its in AF, but it should be :) Good job on the NEX5, my sis has the NEX3 (from my suggestion to get it) and she loves it! Honestly though I think your e-mount lenses are much better if you plan on doing video, my a-mount has some AF motor noise in video :S

  • I'm not sure but in 4:50 when you are talking about how "tight" the manual focus is. Could that be because the MF/AF switch was in the AF position? I'm a novice too not tryin to be critical just wondering myself if that makes a difference. Good video and humor btw! I just got my NEX 5K yesterday up from my DSC-T90 and looking at getting this lens with the LAEA1 adapter I should get AF enabled. Happy shooting!
