I remember when I 1st heard this song . It was on the 2 LP record set that came out a few years after he passed this plane of exsitance and I got the set back in 1977 . When I was in the Army Digging a M60 trenchDuring Annual Training at Fort Hunter Leggett in 1983 I started reciting the Poem . My section sgt was near by and after I finshed he asked what was that poem . Great song .

@maintech777 Thank you for your comment and for visiting the site. I've always been somewhat amazed how the arrangement and Jim Croces's treatment captures the essence of the Kipling poem. This is the folk in the purest sense. It is a splendid work.

Hi Jan,
This came about in 1998. The show was prime time Granada TV in the UK which was aired on a Saturday night, called "Stars In Their Eyes". The premise was a "sound-alike" for people who could play/sing like a famous artist. I was lucky enough to be selected from 50,000 applicants to appear on the show, portraying Jim Croce. I still have good friends and fond memories from my time on that show. You can find video of my performance on my channel. Far more to the story, but no room here....

@ronboy51 I apologize for the delay in responding to your comment. First, thanks for checking out my site and for your comment. Your story is interesting. Can you tell us more about the circumstance that brought it about? How is it that you were selected? What was the process for doing so?

@janhammer39 Hey, I was astonished to see you'd added a photo of me portraying Jim (2min 37 secs). This was my 15 minutes of fame, playing "Jim" on British national TV back in 1998. That was a great honour for me. Thanks for the memory!!
Never before heard this song. Beautiful.

@pmcscwacks Yes, that tune is a bit surprising from him for some reason. I wish I knew more about the songs creation beyond Kipling. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
