The back deck roll sweep roll. A variation that de-emphasizes the set up is called the ej roll.

  • Thanks for the comment, let me know how it goes.

  • Thanks for the comment

  • These names are attempting to differentiate on different variations of the roll. Since the screw roll was first named years ago, it has been more exactly described. However the twist and slice roll is more like what the screw roll has been described.

  • BTW, your videos are really usefull as i currently only know the eskimo roll but im going to try the c to c once i get back in the water on wed the 22. lol ive watched yuour videos about 20 times each now and there good, but why does the instructor lift his 4 left fingers from the baddle when he comes up from his twist and slice (eskimo) roll. Again ty

  • Just my personal test to hold a really light paddle and make the technique work not forcing the paddle down. No super hard grip.....not part of the technique not necessary.

  • not hard at all if you can keep the focus

  • The rodeo back deck roll you seek is in another video on Chris' page. The man can speak for himself, but you might want to check out his cred's before you call him an idiot.

  • before you criticize this guy do a google search on him chris spelius. i think he knows what he is talking about

  • on my 4th yr paddling and have been very successful with all types of rolling. My first year i watched these videos thousands of times and i would lkike to thankyou for them. lately for me a modified back deck roll works best since my falling in motion leavfes in a perfect position, almost looks like a backwards c to c. Other times in better big water conditions i use a sweep. can roll in class 4 now and love the sport more now then ever

  • Chris Your Amazing!!

  • This roll is usually just called the sweep roll now I think, but would it be worth trying to finish more upright than on the back deck, especially in a playboat? In my Project 52 with the seat about 1/2" back, if I lean back to finish, the stern dives and I go over the other side on a powerful roll. Plus, finishing on the back deck is risky if you miss the roll, since you're on your back deck (which is really bad when it's shallow or really powerful current where it's hard to get to the bow).

  • this is a great vid its really helping me when im trying to roll !

  • lol i only roll like this (i do slalom)

  • Thanks! This is the roll I have been doing!! I thought a back deck roll was when you go over thrusting your paddle forwards leaning back over the deck then hip flick and sweep all laying on the back deck!! It is possible to do this roll without getting your head wet!! I have been told! Do you have any idea what this roll is called? Anyone!

  • I'm so thankful for this video. I haven't gotten my roll yet. I have tried the C to C, and the Sweep. Finally someone started me with this roll. I was very inconsistant with it BUT i got it 6 out of about 20! After this video, I'm hoping to be consistant. I'll find out today! Thank you sooo much

  • oldschool roll teaching. I swear no'one teaching the roll that ends on the backdeck anymore because it is totally impractical on whitewater. If you end on your back you may not have time to go forward specially in a hole. just come up forward man its better

  • @kyaker123... as your technique improves you will likely find that your momentum is starting to carry you over the other side; the final stroke will prevent that.

No matter what roll you use it's a good idea to practice the transition from roll to aggressive paddling, and the final stroke is a good move toward that. When you roll up in a rapid you'll need to get back in control of your boat and re-oriented immediately, and that means moving into a paddling position as soon as you come up!
