  • what's with hand men!..

  • Go easy on the guy: this was in his first or maybe second year of debating (and was one of his worst rounds even back then), before he became amazing and developed an incredible speaking style as well as content.

Frankly, he would probably say that style shouldn't be secondary - it can be much more important than content sometimes.

....And for anyone watching for debating pointers, DON'T talk this quickly.

  • @pjmnash Everyone has a style, and every style has strengths. I find the most teams have a fast talking thinker that brings the meat of the argument and is difficult to entirely refute (in CP and BP style anyways) because there is only a few minutes to assemble opp. But the average team also has the Rhetorician who finds the memorable analogies, melodious words and impassioned sloganeering in the thinkers arguments and empasizes them on that level. Without both, the team rarely wins tournaments.

  • holy shit it's Tony Hyward

  • He talks too fast--not conducive for listening! I too have studied and excelled and won competitions in debate. Stye may be indeed secondary but the audience must be communicated with in such a way so that they will listen. Judges can design their own standards but in the end, You don't find the five American Presidents educated at Yale winning an election by talking as fast as he is.

  • imo, debate is all about talking fast to squeeze in as many points of contention as possible. content is all, style is secondary.

  • HIS NAME IS RICHARD LIZIUS ! :) :)

    Yes... he is from UofT...

He is one of the best debaters i know.
