Congressman and Democratic Presidential Candidate discusses why he will reintroduce discussion of the "Fairness Doctrine"in his FCC oversight committee in the House for broadcasters decades after it was abandoned. His main contention is that media consolidation certainly played a role in stifling vigorous debate before the Iraq War and that the media must be studied to see if if it is truly operating in the "public interest." His telling example was the research which indicated that on the mainstream TV networks only three of 393 "experts" used in the weeks before the war questioned the rush to war. Clearly, the American Public is being offered fewer and fewer diverse opinions on the public airways.

  • @Seedofwinter HEAR HEAR....great comment! The U.S. media is a one legged, one armed BANDIT. They get huge amounts of monies from advertisers even as ownership is concentrated among six huge corporations; that's is at least oligopoly, possibly monopoly. All MSM disseminate, propagate and, most egregiously, ENDORSE the official corporate, right wing lies. Restore the Fairness Doctrine and put strict limits on media ownership as had been the case PRIOR to R. Reagan.

  • @ASBSIX

Get the fuck outta here. The Universities are bias, why? Because they don't teach silly ass creationism and bible study. What you label as bias, is just straight up and down science and knowledge.

Right wing radio is CONSTANTLY lying and ginning up hate towards the President and liberals.

    YOU ARE FUCKNG STUPID

  • @Seedofwinter What the fuck are you talking about? Did the "progressives" aka Socialists forget that they dominate all other forms of media: Newspapers, magazines, movies, NPR, that annoying little box called television. And they run the federal government, which they spent the last 90+ years co-opting.

I'm sorry, who's got the room to complain? Dumbass.

  • All of you people are the freaking source of every problem in the media. Because of you the History Channel mainly talks about psychics. Your thirst for political power turns every station into a horse race about polls instead of ideas. Soon, your children will take over and every new movie, song, commercial, and TV show will have Justin Bieber.

  • liberals always want the nanny state to protect their interests at the cost of freedom, what hypocrits

  • @gtc1961 You never started. You obviously haven't really watched Fox News, I'm assuming.

  • @HoGraz Fox news eqivalent???? MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, NT Times, PBS, NPR, Wash. Post, do you want me to continue?

  • Then go on NPR asshole. If you want the public to pay for equal airtime then go there.

  • @PikSokolit You probably still watch Fox.

  • @Seedofwinter THANK YOU. About time other liberals get PISSED like me. We need a Fox News equivalent or at least this to get us into a normal reality.

  • @ThePelicans44 This is not a liberal/conservative issue. When everything the public hears is driven by the dollar, there can be no objective and independent media, PARTICULARLY if only six corporations control all 400 channels. Media consolidation is bad for public awareness of current issues. We get "moderatized" pablum from the associated press.
