Master Your Pentatonics! Eric Johnson has sussed countless ways to incorporate the five-note pentatonic scale and all of its modes into his compositions and improvisations. Emin Pentatonic Lick 1 & 2 are representative of the way Johnson often breaks the garden variety pentatonic scale - E pentatonic minor, in this case into various numerical groupings. For instance, the notes in Emin Pentatonic Lick 1 are grouped in descending three-, four-, and five-note segments, while the lick in Emin Pentatonic Lick 2 teams its descending scale tones in five-, four-, and six-note groups. Notice how the pull-offs in both licks enable smooth, legato phrasing. It's melodic moves like these that transform this otherwise pedestrian scale into something of alluring and lasting beauty.

All it is is a sequence. Sure this is one way of doing it but try going from the top of the scale. Start by going down the scale 3 notes then up 1 then down 3 and up one. Practice that and then you can do down 4 up 1 or down 5 or down 6. Eric Johnson uses these a lot but he mixes up the numbers so it doesn't sound like an exercise.
