Make-Up Artist Dick Smith talked about the obstacles of establishing the first television makeup department at NBC. As TV's premier makeup artist, he discussed the challenges of working with the studio's hot lights, the live schedule that left little time for changes, and developing the correct colors and textures to be seen on the first television screens. Smith recalled the many mishaps while doing live television, and how he eventually honed his skills, and pioneered techniques and materials that enabled television makeup departments to evolve. Among the shows that Smith spoke about in great detail were Philco-Goodyear Playhouse, Hallmark Hall of Fame, and Mark Twain Tonight!

  • @TVLEGENDS Would nice at higher resolution for future generations.

  • i saw him at IMATS and i was soo star struck to say hi :(

  • Thanks for the upload. Best make-up man on Earth. I hope he lives to be a 1,000!

  • Chiaroscuro is more about using light and dark or textures to create a feeling of depth. Having said that--- Dick Smith is fantastic. I'm still a bigger Rick Baker fan, but Dick's work on The Excorcist is still monumental.

  • The Godfather Pts. I & II/ The Exorcist/ Taxi Driver/ The Deer Hunter/Amadeus

  • whats some of this guys best work?cgi isnt taking over totally

  • the only one better than Dick Smith is Lon Chaney

  • This guy is one of the, if not the best, make-up artists, of all time.

  • my brother gave me a dick smith book when i was about 7 or 8 its has all his classics in there, im 24 and still have it, he is a legend, you cant beat getting your hands dirty with latex lol.. CGI is taking over which is sad.. many thanx for posting these videos, its really nice to hear his storie...

  • Keep this great subject going. Now you have the First King pin of the makeup FX industry, how about a few more? Rick Baker, Jack Pierce, to name a few.
