A studio outtake from Gould's 1955 recording sessions at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in Manhattan. From "A State Of Wonder" - available on CD (Sony S3K87703) or on iTunes.
Not undermining Gould's unique talent, one realises of course that quodlibets aren't unique to this generation as the idea of the 'variations' is it's basis and application. I was hoping for a more subtle interpolation of the melodies so that it becomes 'hidden' or 'invisible'. Jazz improvisers do it all the time. They say Rachmaninoff was gifted with such a skill as to do it impromptu, maybe, or I may have misunderstood.
Back to Gould, he has such mastery of music that he can do this.
Very interesting that Gould revealed the musical similarity between the 2 anthems. Maybe it's not surprising, since the music for the American anthem was from the British composer John Stafford Smith (30 March 1750 – 21 September 1836).
@bobthebuilder958 I'm not a soldier, but my dad was. My dad served in the United States Army when he served in Vietnam back in 1968. With all respect, I got to admit: as much as I love the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Does this have anything to do with this mash-up between our national anthems?
this is slightly wrong everytime you go to war you come to great britain once the most powerful nation in the world and still has territory as far as the falkland islands next to south america some islands on the pacif plate britain is the greatest country ever to have risen without britain there would be no:
tv,mobile phone, cameras pianos prams hoovers etc.
britain is better in many ways if britain didn't go to america there would be no thanks giving no schools no hospitals
