@tine214 Yes, it is strange how it happened. The Uruguayans lost their heads completely in their QF for some reason, and it's generally accepted that the German ref in the Eng v Arg QF was too fussy and pedantic. And it's still a mystery why Argentina played so cautiously too- they could have taken England on and won. But conspiracy? No. I mean, Italy were the big glamour side of Europe - but no-one accuses England of arranging for North Korea to eliminate a big European danger, do they?

@tine214 No there was no conspiracy to eliminate South American teams. This theory all comes about because an English Ref (Finney) was in charge of the QF between W Germany and Uruguay (4-0 & 2 Uruguayans sent off) and a German Ref (Kreitlein) was in charge of the England v Agentina QF (1-0 & Rattin sent off)and England & Germany later got to the final. As one football writer said : the only problem with the conspiracy theory is that film still exists of the Uruguay and Argentina players' antics.

Referees were ordered to eliminate or help to eliminate the South American teams.

@Footballmatchswap Unfortunately there is not more than that as far as England are concerned, its Wembley 66 end of story; hold on ill throw in Italia 90 as well

@tine214 Yeap, if a man is in vital condition there shouldn't be any barriers.

I was impressed with Rocha dominating the ball. I was also impressed that having 30yr old players was a common thing, whereas a 30yr old player is now considered "old"

Legends! How beautiful was Football back then? Things seem too superficial nowadays.
