Lolita spy hopping at Miami Seaquarium: June 5th, 2009

Lolita is a 42-year old adult killer whale who lives at the Miami Seaquarium in Key Biscayne, FL. She was collected from Penn Cove, Washington on August 8th, 1970. She was moved to the Seaquarium on September 14th that same year. For ten years, she had shared her exhibit with a male relative named Hugo* (he is believed to be her presumed sibling or cousin for both animals were collected from L pod.) . It was hope that would produce a calf but it turned out that they did not get along with each other. Hugo died accidentally from a brain aneurysm on March 4th, 1980. Today, Lolita (Tokitae)'s companions are three pacific white sided dolphins-Li'i, Tique, and Kri. Lolita had two other dolphin companions before (Loke and Ohana) but one dolphin Loke, was moved to the back pools due to a pregnancy with a male calf named Liko who was born on May 23rd, 2009. Ohana on the other hand, was moved to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, IL for a breeding loan in exchange for Tique and Kri.

Lolita is trained and cared for just like any SeaWorld orca and receives the same amount of food and vitamins each day regardless of what behaviors she shows on a daily basis. In this video, Lolita (Tokitae) is seen being a little playful at the guest by spy hopping in a way to "check them out". This behavior occurs during a "mugging situation", where the focus of the animal's attention is on a human, a boat or another foreign object rather than on nearby whales.
