Cornelius passed away this past week. He was my favorite garbage man. His route used to be the French Quarter, but he had been reassigned to debris-filled St. Bernard when I videotaped him. The trashcans had been changed too - the new ones were much larger and heavier, designed to be picked up by the truck. Cornelius could not show off his technique in this situation. The full interview expresses his unique take on the job nobody wants, the ups and downs of being a hopper, what kind of person can handle it, and the importance of fun and mutual respect when performing this grueling job in the summer heat in New Orleans.

Cegan, this is amazing. You've, literally, blown me away. What an incredible man, and you've done a great, artistic tribute.
Thanks, and subbed. :-)

thanks! yep, I'm in N.O. I used to actually enjoy getting caught behind the garbage truck in the French Quarter because of Cornelius - what a show he and the others put on! I will check out your videos and favs asap!
