I feel the same, my debts will be minimal when I graduate but I can say that if I was still in Ireland I would be screwed. Which is why I moved to Canada. I imagine the situation in America is as bad as the situation in Ireland. My advice is to get a job even if it's low paying and save up for a ticket. Canada is good, Germany is good, Australia is good... Basically there's a lot of places where the recession isn't as hardcore and jobs are plenty or education is reasonably priced.

College kid going for CS Engineering degree. I got a full ride for my first year and have enough saved up so that I'll graduate with minimal debt.

Also, who goes unemployed for 3-5 years? That's fairly ridiculous.

Commiefornia is boned even without the recession. Everything there is more expensive because the state decides to mandate, regulate, ban, and meddle in the economy too much. Small businesses can't compete at all, so nobody can get jobs - you're lucky to be treading water over there.
