Bravery of the lone woman shopper

Armed only with a shopping bag, a lone woman shopper rescuing a defenceless man from a savage mob beating - whilst other onlookers walked on by. The woman was picking up groceries when she saw the victim being chased down the street by a baying yobs one on bicycle before being dragged to the floor. The hoodie thugs described by a judge as behaving ''like wild animals'' repeatedly kicked and stamped on the 26-year old man's head and body as passersby watched. But the mystery woman still carrying her shopping bag crossed the road and bravely tackled the gang. She then stood over the unconscious victim as he lay dazed on the floor and told the thugs to clear off. Dramatic CCTV pictures showed the thugs fleeing as the woman checked on the victim. The footage also showed other members of the public either standing back to watch or meekly walking away. The pictures emerged as hoodlums Anton Ward, 24, was jailed for 27 months and Javir Hull, 18, got 18 months in a young offender institute after both admitted violent disorder at Manchester Crown Court. The incident occurred at 3.35pm on March 30 last year whilst the victim was walking in the city's tough Moss Side district. Ward initially pulled up in a taxi to meet a gang of teenage hoodies but a chase began when they pointed at the victim as he walked along Great Western Street. The hoodlum and the mob then ran after the victim with Ward commandeering a bike from the street, enabling him to overtake the others. As the victim hurried down the street he was pulled down by Ward who along with the teenagers set about him. The woman stepped in before the man could sustain any more serious injuries. He was unconscious and bleeding profusely from a head wound and was taken to hospital. Police said the victim was treated for head injuries, swelling and cuts but amazingly suffered no long term injuries. The woman was never traced. Ward and his accomplices were traced by a police squad specializing in gun and gang-related crime.
