This is a special guitar to me so I've been saving it for a special tune. The guitar - a Taylor 555 - was a Christmas present from my wife. She bought it for me in 1991 when Taylor was a much smaller company than it is today.

The tune is a well known piece by Johann Sebastian Bach. Guitarists most often seem to associate it with Leo Kottke. Years ago, I learned that version from the "6 & 12-String Guitar" album in Open G tuning. There, he did it on a 6-String, though I've heard that he later did it on the 12-string.

More recently, I heard Michael Gulezian do the tune on the 12-string in Open D tuning on the Live cd "Concert at St. Olaf College." He uses a slide on the second part.

I liked the way it sounded, so I began to rearrange it in DADGAD. I took some elements from Michael's version, some from Leo, and I even employed a few tricks that I've picked up from learning some of Pierre Bensusan's music. I hope that you enjoy what I've done with it.

D lowered two steps this time.

  • That was really enjoyable to listen to and to watch. Your version of this song and Markinbfa's version (just add this to the address after watch - ?v=4rGvF5WJioY ) have became my faves so far.

  • Gotta love the DADGAD stuff. I discovered the tuning years ago and used it on everything from acoustic stuff to pretty heavy music. Great tuning.

Absolutely love the guitar and playing. You just helped me make up my mind as to my next guitar!
