This is me playing a song I wrote in my basement.

This song is on my album, "The Shakes." Get it on iTunes or at http://www.laurenoconnell.com/mp3-store/ .

--------------

There are four whole people in this house
And I'm the last one awake again
And tomorrow we'll be biting nails
And biting tongues to higher stakes again
I am thinking if I just don't sleep
The morning won't sneak up on me
As just another yesterday again

But I was brilliant for just one day
In 1988
I didn't have to talk, I didn't have to think
They flushed my sins right down a sink
Ten fingers and ten toes, and you're okay
Yeah I think that's what they say
Well how about today?

I think the world has got my number
Oh my God, there's digits in my eyes
I think that I've been dancing 'round
The brightest rooms in a cellophane disguise
Everybody still remembers
Things that I said last September
Oh, but worst of all, so do I

But I was a stranger for just one day
Born with the cleanest slate
My mother loved me before she knew me
Gave me a name that didn't suit me
But hey that's okay
I've kept it anyway
What if I threw it away?

And to me God's just a metaphor
A metaphor for everything that's strange
I take his name in vain a lot
But I'm not sure just what that means these days
Sometimes I wish that I were still religious
Along with a lot of other wishes
But I don't think that God would know my name

But I was forgiven in bygone days
When I still knew how to pray
And all the words were etched in gold
On the little Bible that I stole
From my teacher in second grade
The one I didn't mean to take
Oh what would Jesus say?

And things were perfect for a time
In 1999
I was eleven years old, and we drove south
Yeah, down to my grandfather's house
And everything was fine
It was right before he died
We were all so goddamn fine
We were all so goddamn fine

  • I don't listen to the radio much anymore; it all sounds the same to me. But I do spend a lot of time seaching for original, good music on YouTube. You definitley stand out from the crowd. If you're ever playing anywhere close to where I live, I'll be sure to come see you.

  • She plays this song with such enthusiasm. It's truly powerful. The emotion you hear in her vocals and strength with which she strums those six strings...audible art. One guitar, one girl, a little rhythm, and what do you get? A peak into the soul of an artist who has begun a trip down a road to perfecting a craft that few put so much into anymore. It's an uncommon trait. Mad props.

  • I love revisiting this song (after what seems like too long), you have a lot of other great songs / collabs but this is still my favorite and I hate how youtube makes me have to dig around your channel to get to it.

  • You're a beast at songwriting. Can't get enough of your music. Your lyrics feel like home.

  • damnnnn this chick's talented.

  • peace and love!

  • Kind of hard to get all the words, but this sounds like loser music to me. Not willin to expose myself to the whole bit. I like the number 8, so I was searchin 1988. Next I'll try 1888.

  • @animesweetie1 it is sad that i have to explain this to you... very sad. 'and to me god's just in other words.' let me break it down for you - and to me god is just in other words. "in other words" is an expression. english must not be your first language. does that help any?

  • Still love this song & White Noise the best... They are raw talent & inspiration!!!

  • Genius and passion collide! Don't ever stop kiddo..you got it!

  • Thank you for writing this beautiful song we can all relate to.

  • how even does "and to me god's just in other words" make sense? i thought it said "and to me god's just another word" /:
